The most common myth
about perms.

“Many clients believe that after a digital perm, their hair will fall perfectly into shape on its own — every morning, straight out of the shower. This is one of the most common misconceptions in the salon.”

The reality is that permed hair requires more daily maintenance than unpermed hair — not less. Without proper styling after shampooing, permed hair can become frizzy, undefined, or overly voluminous. The products you use at home will also significantly affect how your waves look once dry.

Yasu shares this information upfront — not to discourage you, but because understanding what a perm truly requires leads to better results and happier clients.

Why perms behave differently
on different hair types.

The structure of Asian hair and Western (non-Asian) hair is fundamentally different — and this directly affects how long a perm lasts.

Asian Hair

  • Thicker in diameter (approx. 80–100μm) — more cortex volume inside each strand
  • More cuticle layers — robust and resistant to stress and chemical treatment
  • The cortex is the internal structure that holds the wave shape
  • More cortex = more material to form and hold the curl
  • Perms tend to last longer and hold their shape well

Western (Non-Asian) Hair

  • Finer in diameter (approx. 60–80μm) — less cortex volume per strand
  • Fewer cuticle layers — more fragile and more vulnerable to chemical stress
  • Less cortex = less internal material to form and maintain the curl shape
  • Perms generally do not last as long as on Asian hair
Important

This is not about technique.
It is about hair biology.

Even with the most precise perm application, the longevity of the result is determined largely by your hair’s internal structure. Yasu will give you an honest assessment of what to expect based on your specific hair type during consultation.

Perm Client Checklist

I understand and agree to the following:

Daily styling is required after shampooing Permed hair does not style itself. A diffuser, curl cream, or styling product is typically needed each morning to define the waves. Without styling, hair may appear frizzy or shapeless.
Home care products affect the result The shampoo, conditioner, and styling products used at home directly impact how the perm looks and how long it lasts. Yasu will recommend suitable products during the session.
Western hair perms do not last as long as Asian hair perms Due to differences in cortex volume and hair structure, perms on Western (non-Asian) hair generally have a shorter lifespan than those on Asian hair. This is normal and expected.
Bleached ends or severely colour-damaged hair may result in a declined service If bleach history remains in the ends of the hair, Yasu may decline the perm service to prevent breakage. The safety of your hair always comes first. This will be assessed during consultation.

Hair that has been repeatedly coloured and sustained significant damage may also be declined — even without bleach. Outside Japan, hair colourants are available with developer strengths of up to 6–12% oxidant, compared to the lower strengths typically used in Japan. A single colour service at that strength can cause damage comparable to bleaching. If your hair shows this level of damage, the risk of breakage during a perm is too high to proceed safely.
Previously straightened hair may also be declined If you have had a straightening treatment (縮毛矯正 / thermal reconditioning), Yasu will assess your hair on the day and may decline the perm service depending on its current condition.
Only digital perms are offered — no cold perms Digital perms use heat to create softer, more natural-looking waves that tend to last longer and cause less damage than traditional cold perms.
The final result depends on my hair’s condition and history No specific result can be guaranteed. Yasu will provide an honest assessment during consultation and will not proceed if the risk outweighs the benefit.

How to maintain your perm
at home.

The effort you put in at home is just as important as the salon service itself. Here is what Yasu recommends.

1

Shampoo gently — and not too often

Over-washing removes the natural oils that help define curls. Aim for every other day, or use a co-wash (conditioner-only wash) on days in between.

2

Apply styling product while hair is still wet

After washing, apply a curl cream or mousse to damp hair before drying. This is the most critical step for wave definition. Do not skip it.

Drying technique matters: dry the roots and scalp thoroughly first — this prevents bacterial growth and odour at the scalp. Then, dry the mid-lengths and ends to around 60–70% dry. Once the hair reaches that semi-dry state, that is the ideal moment to apply your styling product and finish the look. You are not aiming for completely dry hair before styling — just the scalp.

Important: do not brush your hair with tension from roots to ends while it is wet. Pulling or stretching wet permed hair under tension — especially with a brush — can loosen the wave pattern and cause breakage.

3

Use a diffuser — not a regular nozzle

A diffuser attachment distributes heat evenly and lifts the curl rather than blowing it straight. It makes a significant difference in the final result.

If you don’t have a diffuser, remove the nozzle attachment entirely and dry your hair on a low airflow setting. Avoid concentrating direct airflow onto one section — keep the dryer moving gently around the hair.

4

Choose the right shampoo

Sulfate-free, moisturising shampoos are best for permed hair. Harsh shampoos strip the wave pattern and cause frizz. Yasu will advise on what to look for when choosing a shampoo — including ingredients to avoid and what works best for your hair type.

Yasu does not sell products or push you toward any particular brand. The advice is genuinely yours to take and use however you choose.

5

Be gentle — but you can touch your hair while it dries

Gently running your fingers through your hair while it dries is fine — and loosening sections with your hands is perfectly okay too. What to avoid is using a fine-tooth comb with tension, or brushing with force while the hair is still wet. Dragging or pulling wet permed hair under pressure can stretch and loosen the wave, or cause breakage. Keep it gentle, and let the curl form naturally as it dries.

Common questions
about digital perms.

How long does a digital perm last?
For Asian hair, a digital perm typically lasts 4–6 months with proper care. For Western (non-Asian) hair, expect a shorter lifespan — generally 1–3 months — depending on damage level, chemical history, and home care routine. Individual results vary significantly based on hair condition and lifestyle.
Can I get a perm if I’ve had my hair bleached?
It depends on where the bleach history sits. If bleached sections remain in the hair — particularly toward the ends — Yasu may decline the service to prevent breakage. This will be assessed during consultation. Please share your full bleach history when you message via WhatsApp.

Hair coloured with high-strength developer (6–12% hydrogen peroxide, which is common outside Japan) can sustain damage comparable to bleaching — even after a single colour service. If your hair shows this level of damage, Yasu will also decline the perm service to protect your hair from breakage.
Can I get a perm if I’ve had a straightening treatment?
Possibly — but it depends on the current condition of your hair and how long ago the straightening was done. Yasu will assess your hair on the day and will advise honestly. In some cases, the service may be declined to protect the integrity of your hair.

If you have had both a straightening treatment and colour services, the likelihood of a declined service is significantly higher. The combination of straightening chemicals and colour — particularly with high-strength developer — places considerable stress on the hair structure, and applying a perm on top carries a real risk of breakage. Please share your full treatment history via WhatsApp before booking.
What is the difference between a digital perm and a cold perm?
A cold perm uses chemicals alone to reshape the hair, resulting in tight curls that look best when wet and looser when dry. A digital perm uses both chemicals and heat, creating softer, more defined waves that look best when dry. Digital perms tend to last longer and create a more natural result, particularly for medium to long hair.
Will my hair look the same every day without styling?
No — and this is the most important thing to understand before booking. Without daily styling, permed hair will not fall into perfect waves on its own. Styling with a curl cream and diffuser after every wash is essential. The good news is that once you have a routine, it becomes quick and easy.
How long does the service take?
A digital perm with cut typically takes 3–4 hours. Please plan accordingly and avoid scheduling other appointments immediately after. Yasu works with one client at a time, so there is no rushing.
